Even after announcing 100 smart cities in 2015, there is not much development happening in terms of smart cities, as the planning authority have yet not utilized Blockchain technology.
Experts believe that Blockchain technology can help Indian develop smart cities, which has been hold up as authorities implement such a mega projects are unable to implement it citing technical difficulty.
Under the Indian government mission of Digital India, Blockchain technology can work as a booster where areas of governance can be integrated with new technologies making the smart cities more livable than the cities we are living today.
India’s planning authority, NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog can utilize Blockchain technology in voting, land records, which is yet to explore, though over 1333 projects have been already sanctioned.
With a view that all smart cities will have cutting-edge technology, the fact is that only 1.8% of $7.64 billion funds allotted on these projects are utilized.
The government wants citizens living in smart cities to adopt digital into every aspect of city life from infrastructure, healthcare, education, cleaning, hygiene, waste management to services.
Explaining further, experts says that Blockchain can play a pivotal role right from voting, security, land registration, logistics, healthcare, power distribution, banking, municipal & educational certificates and other governance-related areas.
While Indian government is yet to explore the entire gamut of potential applications and implementation of Blockchain in smart cities, a series of Blockchain-based PoCs (proof-of-concept) have already been built by various companies in India.
Looking on these development, NITI Aayog too working on IndiaChain, a mega blockchain project that’s crucial for the implementation of the Smart Cities Mission.
The reason why Blockchain has been promoted, as it public Blockchain uses either a proof of work (PoW) or a proof of stack (PoS) to arrive at the consensus, after which data once recorded in a Blocktree or Blockchain can’t be deleted and manipulated. This brings transparency and removes any scope of data manipulation.
