A detective spoke at the digital asset industry conference in New York, claiming that 130 cases investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) were related to cryptocurrencies. An investigator named Kyle Armstrong said that these “threat tagging” cases with virtual currency include criminal acts such as human trafficking, illegal drug sales, kidnapping and extortion. Armstrong added that the FBI has noticed an increase in illegal activities paid through digital currency. The FBI also noted that there has been a dramatic increase in ransomware-related extortion plans on the US Southwest border.
