The U.S government is looking to sell the proceeds of an illegal drug operation, including 4,000 Bitcoins worth over $24 million as of now.
According to an announcement by the Department of Justice for the District of Maryland on Tuesday, the federal grand jury indicted two men, Ryan Farace and Robert Swain. The two 34 year-old Maryland men allegedly manufactured and distributed alprazolam tablets, more commonly known as “Xanax” on the dark web for Bitcoins.
Between November 2013 and June 2017, Farace allegedly solicited orders for the pills by communicating with customers using encrypted electronic messages and shipped them through the U.S Postal Service.
The prosecutors stated,
“As part of the indictment, the government seeks the forfeiture of no less than $5,665,000, plus the value of 4,000 Bitcoin believed to be the proceeds of the illegal drug sales, two residences, and two vehicles used to facilitate the drug distribution.”
